VL Studio is the most recent reintroduction of the lamps designed for Radiohuset (headquarters of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation) in the 1940s by architect Vilhelm Lauritsen. He designed the building itself—still a Copenhagen landmark—as well as the interior, and the Studio lamp was used outside the studios to indicate if a recording was taking place. VL Studio is closely related to the popular Radiohus Pendant, which is also made in triple-layered opal glass, providing a very comfortable light distribution and radiating a delicate glow to the surroundings. The Table/Floor version of VL Studio is based on the design and materials of the lamp head from the original wall lamp. It comes in classic polished brass with triple-layered, mouth-blown opal glass—as well as in a matt black version with a graphical and clean expression. VL Studio Table/Floor is available in three sizes and can be used on the floor to light up the room from below, or as table lamps creating an ambient and cosy atmosphere. With its simple aesthetic and exquisite materials, VL Studio Table/Floor brings a modern touch to any interior.
Throughout his life, Vilhelm Lauritzen adhered to the principle that architecture is applied art—with equal emphasis on both 'art' and 'applied'. "No life without aesthetics" was another one of Vilhelm Lauritzen's firmly held beliefs.
Vilhelm Lauritzen mastered both daylight and artificial lighting. He consistently involved daylight in his architectural projects by including large south and west-facing windows that neatly mixed warm sunlight with the cooler sky light flowing in through windows facing north and east. It was an approach that shifted focus from the limited wall surfaces in the room itself. People, furnishings and fittings are highlighted and shaded in the sculptural light.
