The PH Artichoke was designed in 1958 by Poul Henningsen for the Langelinie Pavillonen, a modernist Copenhagen restaurant where it continues to enchant visitors today. With its world-famous unique sculptural design, the PH Artichoke is viewed as an international design icon. The fixture has 72 leaves, positioned so as to provide totally glare-free light from any angle. To ensure a high level of quality, much of the production process is still carried out by hand. The renowned light fixture has kept its original copper finish, which to this date illuminates spaces with its warm and ambient lighting. With the brushed and polished steel as well as white painted metal models, further members have been added to the PH Artichoke family, highlighting its versatility and timeless silhouette. In 2018, Louis Poulsen celebrated the design's 60th anniversary with an introduction of a beautiful brushed brass edition. When Henningsen originally designed the iconic PH Artichoke he opted for solid copper leaves with a satin finish and with a rose finish on the leaves' interiors. This combination lent an exceptional warmth to the lamp's organic form and beautifully reflected the light from its hidden source. The light from the copper rose edition, in particular, creates an inviting ambiance. To ensure a high level of quality, much of the production process is still carried out by hand.

The 2024 anniversary edition is painted matte white on the outside, with a pale rose hue on the inside as a tribute to the original Poul Henningsen design, that was copper with pale rose inside. This fixture provides a soft, warm light, while the frame made of metallized brass add an elegant touch. Every PH Artichoke Anniversary Edition is engraved with a unique ID number.

Poul Henningsen
Poul Henningsen (PH) was born in Copenhagen by the famous Danish actress Agnes Henningsen. He never graduated as an architect, but studied at The Technical School at Frederiksberg in Denmark from 1911-14, and then at Technical College in Copenhagen from 1914-17.

He started practicing traditional functionalistic architecture, but over the years his professional interests changed to focus mainly on lighting which is what he is most famous for. He also expanded his field of occupation into areas of writing, becoming a journalist and an author. For a short period at the beginning of WWII, he was the head architect of the Tivoli Gardens project in Copenhagen. But like many other creative people, he was forced to flee Denmark during the German occupation but soon became a vital part of the Danish colony of artists living in Sweden.

His lifelong collaboration with Louis Poulsen began in 1925 and lasted until his death in 1967. To this day, Louis Poulsen still benefits from his genius. Poul Henningsen was also the first editor of the company magazine "NYT". The CEO of Louis Poulsen at the time, Sophus Kaastrup-Olsen, gave the magazine to PH as a gift after he had been terminated from another Danish newspaper - his opinions were too radical.

Poul Henningsen's pioneering work concerning the relationship between light structures, shadows, glare and color reproduction, compared to man's need for light, remains the foundation of the lighting theories still practiced by Louis Poulsen.
