Ekelund Master Weavers of Sweden is located in a small village in the western part of the country. Featuring over 1,000 items, the Ekelund line of fine textile gifts includes a wide range of tablecloths, napkins, runners, place mats, towels, throws, pillows, rugs and dish cloths.
Founded in 1692, Ekelund is a family-run company dedicated to excellence in design, quality and service with a commitment to environmentally conscious manufacturing. Arguably the oldest textile manufacturer in the world, with family ownership dating back to 1692, the company has won numerous awards for its state-of-the-art weaving technology and superior design.
All of the raw materials used by Ekelund consist of yarn spun from 100 percent natural fibers. Traditions have been followed from times past when everything was integral to the cycle of nature. "We have just one earth," Christer Ekelund tells his employees, and all are a part of contributing to the most environmentally clean factory. "The greatest results are obtained via the sum of all of the smallest environmental initiatives" is Ekelund's credo.
Some of Ekelund's environmental efforts include:
- The factory uses rainwater in the process of preshrinking all of its textiles.
- Humidity is controlled by adding rainwater to the indoor air when needed.
- Energy-efficient heat pumps connected to the ground water level are used for cooling and heating of the buildings.
- The environmentally certified forest owned by the factory is harvested and is used for additional heating.
- All textile finishing machines include a closed drainage system and no hazardous disposal is required.
- Building roofs are very well insulated and made to reflect the sun's rays so that inside cooling is significantly reduced.
- All lights throughout the buildings are certified low-energy light tubes and bulbs.
- Movement sensors control most lights.
- All forms of recycling have been adopted.
The textiles produced by Ekelund are all made with certified organically grown fibers, and labeled with the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation's "Good Environmental Choice" label. This indicates that the textiles are manufactured using methods that meet the Society's criteria, including regulating water and energy consumption.
FJORN Scandinavian is proud to be one of the top retailers of Ekelund Weavers in the United States. The entire 2009 collection can be found on www.fjorn.com and includes the full variety of a new soft and highly absorbent Ekelund Dish Cloth, woven from cotton and bamboo fibers. The bamboo fibers naturally kill bacteria that come in contact with the fiber. The dish cloth also eliminates bad odors that can occur with other dish cloths. The cloth can be sterilized in the microwave oven to keep it clean in the kitchen.
